Dexam Supreme non-stick pancake and pizza griddle pan
- Available from Harts of Stur (£62.40), Amazon (£84.99)

Best versatile pancake pan
Star rating: 5/5
This large 34cm pan has an interesting multi-purpose functionality that we haven't seen before. As well as being great for pancakes, it's oven safe up to 180C meaning it can be used for making pizzas, scones, crumpets and more. It's a sturdy piece of kit, yet surprisingly lightweight and would be easy enough to store at the bottom of a drawer since it's mostly flat.
Our American pancakes cooked really well on this pan, with the large surface area meaning we could cook several at once. We were also able to achieve large, thin crêpes, although the short handles meant we needed to use a palette knife to flip them rather than tossing with the pan. We did find the handles got a little warm but overall this is a great choice if your looking for versatility.
Ninja Foodi Zerostick frying pan, 24cm
- Available from Amazon (£43.49), Lakeland (£44.99), Ninja Kitchen (£44.99)

Best frying pan for pancakes
Star rating: 5/5
If what you're after is a great everyday frying pan that works well for pancakes too this could be a brilliant option. There are three sizes available: 20cm, 24cm and 28cm, and we like the largest size best for making crêpes.
We found the non-stick coating super effective and surprisingly study and the long, thin handle remains cool and is brilliant for pancake flipping. On test, we were impressed with how quick this pan was to heat up and how evenly it distributed heat, meaning our pancakes cooked evenly no matter where they were in the pan.
HexClad 30cm hybrid griddle pan
- Available from HexClad (£139)

Best professional quality pancake pan
Star rating: 4.5/5
Featuring HexClad's unique hybrid technology, this griddle pan combines the non-stick elements of pans with a sturdy coating that allows you to use metal utensils. As with all of HexClad's pans you'll need to season before first use (and occasionally throughout it's life) to establish the coating.
On test, we found the 30cm size meant we could cook really large crêpes or three medium American pancakes at once. The crêpes were a little thin in the middle thanks to the slight curve in the pan, but the American pancakes were thick, tall and fluffy.

Our Place griddle pan
- Available from Our Place (£110)

Best griddle pan for pancakes
Star rating: 4.5/5
This griddle pan might look like a regular baking tray, but it's actually a super versatile piece of kit. The effective non-stick coating makes it perfect for using on the hob top, plus it looks beautiful since it comes in a range of the brand's well known colours. Available in two sizes, these pans aren't induction compatible, meaning you'll need a gas hob to use it. Plus we found that the largest size is too large to fit in a standard UK oven, which means if you choose this size it won't be able to double up as a baking tray.
This pan is ideal for cooking American pancakes and on test we found we could cook eight at once on the larger griddle, perfect for catering to a crowd. They cooked evenly and lifted easily thanks to the non-stick coating.
ProCook Professional 26cm Granite Crêpe Pan
- Available from ProCook (£32)

Best non-stick pancake pan
Star rating: 4.5/5
Despite being one of the more affordable pans on this list, when unboxing this pan we were impressed by the weightiness and high quality. Made from forged aluminium with a ceramic coating for non-stick, it would be brilliant for frying eggs as well as cooking pancakes. The long, elegant handle looks beautiful and is ergonomic making it comfortable for flipping pancakes even for the inexperienced.
On test, we found this pan super effective for making crêpes and American pancakes. The non-stick was one of the best we've tested and all the pancakes lifted easily.
MasterClass 24cm ceramic non-stick crêpe pan

Best pancake pan for induction hobs
Star rating: 4.5/5
For the eco-conscious, this MasterClass pan is chemical-free, coated with a ceramic non-stick designed to release pancakes without them needing persuasion with a spatula. Suitable for all stove tops, it also comes with a 15-year guarantee, which is impressive given it's one of the more affordable options in this list.
The pan is shallow with a small lip which made it easy to flip our pancakes, which released easily thanks to the effective non-stick surface. The heat distribution was even, with no cool spots on the pan meaning our pancakes cooked evenly. This is a great budget-friendly option.
Le Creuset cast iron small crêpe pan
- Available from Le Creuset (£139), Amazon (£139)

Best colourful pancake pan
Star rating: 4/5
This beautifully elegant pan is designed with crêpes in mind and comes with a traditional crêpe spreader and wooden spatula which take some practise to use. At 27cm this pan is the perfect size for making crêpes, although we found it also performed well for making American pancakes which rose beautifully on test thanks to the cast iron.
When testing we initially found the enamelled coating ineffective and our pancakes stuck. However, after a few attempts the pan was seasoned enough from the oil we'd used to form a coating and the rest of our pancakes released easily. Even though Le Creuset says this pan won't need seasoning, we'd recommend giving it a light season before use.

Staub 28cm cast iron pancake pan

Best stylish pancake pan
Star rating: 4/5
Staub's enamelled cast-iron pancake pan is specifically designed for thin pancakes and crêpes, distributing heat evenly across its 28cm diameter by sitting flat and low across the heat source. It is, however, not designed for flipping since it's made of cast iron and is very heavy. Luckily, a wooden spatula (as well as a wooden crêpe spreader) is included to help with turning the pancakes without damaging the pan's coating.
While the cast iron makes the pan heavy, it is an excellent conductor of heat, which meant our pancakes were evenly cooked on test. Certainly an investment, it comes backed up with a 30 year guarantee so you can be sure there's longevity to your pan.
De Buyer blue steel crêpe pan

Best affordable pancake pan
If you want a pan that looks the part, and is very reasonably priced, then a De Buyer blue steel crêpe pan is the one for you. It’s French and they know a thing or two about crêpes.
Heavy duty, it will work on all hobs and happily go into the oven. Iron retains heat well, so it won’t behave like a lighter non-stick pan, meaning you’ll have to keep an eye on the crêpe. Plus you’ll have to season it and look after it, but it should last you a lifetime.
Be warned though, if you choose a 20cm pan the actual base measurement is smaller, so you’ll end up with neat, petite pancakes. Choose a 24cm pan for bigger crêpes.
Do you need a special pan for pancakes?
There's a reason why the first pancake being a mess is cliché — there are a lot of factors that go into making a great pancake. For a pan to make brilliant pancakes the most important elements are heat conduction and a good non-stick coating.
Heat is important as pancakes cook very quickly and you need a pan which conducts heat speedily and evenly. It's also important to preheat your pan before adding ingredients, but you don't want the heat to get too high as this will endanger damaging the non-stick and could also burn your pancake. Speaking of non-stick, all the pans in this list have an effective coating which means you need minimal oil when cooking, and allowing the pancakes to release and flip with ease.
All the pans in this list can also be used for frying other things, but many have a very small lip around the edge making them ill-suited to anything saucy. If you're just thinking about making pancakes on Pancake Day, any pan that has an effective non-stick coating will work pretty well.
How to make the best pancakes
Generally speaking, a heavy, non-stick frying pan about 16cm across is best. Heat the pan over a medium heat then, just before you add the batter, brush lightly with melted butter - use a pastry brush or a piece of kitchen paper dipped in the butter.
Pour just enough batter into the pan and tilt so that it coats the base. Leave the pancake to cook until you start to see tiny bubbles appearing on the top.
Top tips for making the perfect pancake every time
- Preheat the pan to maximise its non-stick properties
- Lightly grease the pan before use
- Using a folded paper towel, wipe the pan clean of any left-over residue and lightly grease again before adding more batter
