For most of us who love to cook or host, the kitchen is the heart of the home, but in few homes is this more true than a farmhouse.

Whether you've got a historical home or are looking to incorporate charming period features into a more modern space, rustic farmhouse style is making a comeback.

Luckily, you don't need to have an AGA or chickens to make the most of this trend (although lucky you if you do). There are lots of smaller elements you can introduce into your kitchen to add a little farmhouse style.

Read on for our favourite rustic farmhouse interiors, plus how to embrace this timeless trend in your own home.

These jugs from Falcon are made from enamel and come in a range of beautiful colours. They work well as a water jug to use on the table, but our favourite use for them is as a vase for flowers. The height of the jug makes them ideal for tumbling wild blooms.

Rustic farmhouse kitchen inspiration

Chloe and Charlie Luxton's kitchen

Rustic farmhouse kitchen with blue cupboards and brown stone floor

Chloe and Charlie Luxton, of the Beckford restaurant group, live in a Grade II listed farmhouse. "We inherited the design from the previous owners and have painted the original oak cottage-style doors an Annie Sloan blue, added brass doorknobs, stained the worktops dark oak and improved the lighting," say Chloe and Charlie.

"Plain English it is not, but rather comfortable and functional, and conveniently sits beside the orangery where we have our dining table, having repurposed the old dining room into our study. Having created a double-width gap through the original outside kitchen wall into our new orangery, we moved the kitchen table, allowing us to create extra circulation space within the kitchen."

Jules and Steve Horrell's kitchen

Jules and Steve Horrell in their farm house style kitchen home

Jules and Steve are behind the dining experience Horrell & Horrell in Somerset. Their farmhouse-style home has floor-to-ceiling windows which overlook the garden and barns. "We have always been inspired by old rural farmhouse kitchens in France and Italy, which are the beating heart of the home, with space to prepare, cook and eat together with family and friends", Jules and Steve say.

"When we bought the house back in 2016, we designed our dream kitchen, then a large empty space spread across two rooms. One area is dedicated to cooking and preparing, with a range oven, central island and old wood-fired Rayburn cooker. The other room houses our family dining table, a vintage dresser filled with family finds and a huge larder cupboard – all sourced from Wells Reclamation."

Alice Noakes' kitchen

Cosy kitchen in north Dorset with dining table in the middle

PR consultant Alice Noakes specialises in food and drink, as well as boutique hotels. She lives in North Dorset on the boarder of Somerset and Wiltshire in a small village. "Ours is a rectangular kitchen with a country cottage feel", she says.

"We have shaker-style units with oak tops, a butler sink and a large kitchen table to sit around. The kitchen was already in when we bought the house, but we knew we wanted a farmhouse-style table for everyone to sit around, and we brought in an old dresser that my sister had upcycled to store crockery. I like to have an eclectic mix of furniture styles from different periods in each room, so we also added a mid-century sideboard that my parents were getting rid of."

What's the best colour for a rustic farmhouse kitchen?

When it comes to choosing a colour for your kitchen, there's a lot to consider. In a farmhouse style kitchen, there are a few factors to keep in mind.

Many traditional farmhouse kitchens opt for a more neutral palette as you can see in the inspiration above. Think all shades of blue, creams and muted buttery yellows as forming the backdrop to the kitchen.

Aside from the colour, there are practical elements and textures that are traditional to farmhouse kitchens. A large sink, often in ceramic, is frequently used, as well as a wooden kitchen table and tiled floors.
